Everyone loves a good bagel but not all bagels are created equal, that’s why we created Great Bagel & Bakery!
Opened in 2011, Great Bagel & Bakery has been cranking out the best bagels in Lexington, KY in the traditional of a classic bagelry. With a focus on sustainability and seasonality, our 18 varieties of bagels are prepared onsite. Each one uses a recipe blend of organic, local, and regional single variety flours that arrive in our kitchens directly from our partner farmers.
At Great Bagel & Bakery, we mill our grain daily on a custom built 40″ Vermont New American Stone Mill, and use this fresh, stone-milled flour in all of our bagels and baked goods. We offer a variety of house blended cream cheese, some killer made-to-order breakfast and lunch sandwiches, as well a full roster of Intelligentsia Coffee, Kilogram Tea, and espresso drinks.

In 2011, we set out to create a space reflective of our own core values: inclusiveness and warmth, sustainability as a lifestyle not a fad, and hard work and know-how being the only avenues to making food that we actually want to eat! In the land of fast-food giants, we moved forward and settled into our local niche to make bagels the old-fashioned way.
A tag line we had repeated a million times to ourselves unwittingly became our guiding light: Little Hills Make Big Hills. Sure, it reminds us that little monetary savings created through proper training and company efficiencies creates big savings over time. It also reminds us to act deliberately: contributing kitchen waste to our local composting partner, for example, helps to not only prevent tons of landfill waste, but also creates finished compost. This in turn helps grow community gardens. Every donation to various people and organizations over the years has helped to bolster our burgeoning community and economy. Every kind gesture towards our customers, and towards one another, has created long-standing, priceless relationships.
All these years later, the hard work has proven itself undoubtedly worth it. We are grateful to have built something that continues to give us the tremendous privilege to do right by our customers, our precious team members, and this very special community within which we live!
